On a chilly, calm night in Toronto, fans packed into Queen Street West’s Great Hall to witness Michael Hadreas and Alan Wyffels reshape the Perfume Genius catalogue into something startlingly intimate. The stop marked the closing stretch of their Duo tour, a brief run built around sparse, piano‑driven interpretations of his Glory album and earlier work. After Dan English’s opening set, the pair emerged to a swell of applause before settling at two facing keyboards. What followed was an hour of stripped‑back arrangements that revealed the emotional architecture of songs long known for their lush production. Hadreas’ voice (tense, trembling, and unwavering) cut through the room, catching the light as it reflected off the minimal stage setup. Wyffels anchored each piece with steady, intuitive playing, the two moving in quiet lockstep.Aside from a single drum‑machine pulse, the night belonged entirely to his voice and their playing. Tracks from Set My Heart On Fire Immediately landed with particular force, the simplicity amplifying the rawness at the core of Hadreas’ writing. Whether standing alone at the front of the stage or seated back‑to‑back with Wyffels, he held the audience in a kind of suspended stillness. By the final notes, The Great Hall felt transformed, left humming with the vulnerability and fierce beauty Perfume Genius brings to every show.
