Rainbow Kitten Surprise brought their Love Hate Music Box tour to San Francisco’s Bill Graham Auditorium on Monday November 25th for the final stop on the tour. Fans were eager to see the alternative rock band perform this week, especially as their would-be date at the Fox Theater in Oakland last fall was cancelled – as was the rest of that tour due to a band member’s medical crisis. From the second the group took the stage, they captivated the crowd and performed a set full of fan favourites. Kicking it off with a newer song “Peter Pan” from their most recent release that shares its name with this tour and includes tunes such as “Devil Like Me” and “All That And More (Sailboat)”. The set-list was full and seemly went by really quickly. Rainbow Kitten Surprise let the music speak for itself, not talking to the crowd terribly often throughout the show between tunes. Despite this, concertgoers could tell that Rainbow Kitten Surprise loved performing. Lead vocalist and guitarist Ela Melo danced her way throughout the show, sounding even better live than in recordings which had fans singing along to every song. The group members, consisting of Melo, Darrick “Bozzy” Keller (guitar, backup vocals), Ethan Goodpaster (electric guitar), and Jess Haney (drums). The band got their start in Boone, North Carolina in 2013 when Keller and Melo met in their dorm room at Appalachian State University. Since forming, they have grown greatly, releasing four records, performing at venues such as Red Rocks and festivals like Bonnaroo, plus collaborating with Grammy-award winning artist Kacey Musgraves. As someone who has been excited to see Rainbow Kitten Surprise for a long time, this concert hit the spot and made me want to hit add-to-cart whenever they announce their next tour. I’d highly recommend checking out their discography where ever you get your music as well as attending a live show next time they come to a city near you.
