Irish folk-pop singer/songwriter Darren Kiely kicked off the UK leg of his ‘Never Been Here Before’ world tour in London on Thursday evening with a show at Camden’s iconic Electric Ballroom. Fans were treated to an evening of Kiely’s heartfelt music (with one ‘happy song’ thrown in for good measure), performed with an incredible vitality and enthusiasm that clearly reflected the artist’s love for his craft and appreciation of his audience. This energy was reciprocated by the crowd, who passionately sang along throughout the night and were quick to pick up the lyrics to Kiely’s unreleased tracks. The debut of one of these songs marked a particularly memorable moment in the evening, with the singer/songwriter making his way into the middle of the room to perform amongst the crowd to the delight of his fans. Kiely was joined on stage by his keyboardist and drummer, with all three demonstrating excellent musicianship throughout the night in compliment to Kiely’s powerful and emotive vocals. The evening reached its climax with a crowd-pleasing performance of the upbeat track ‘Avalon’ before the performers returned to the stage for an encore of fan-favourites ‘Say I’ and ‘Sunrise’. Headlining in London for only the second time in his career, Kiely and his band delivered a fantastic performance that has surely guaranteed it won’t be their last time playing in the capital.
