Fans packed the room at Toronto’s Adelaide Hall this past Tuesday May 13th for DeathByRomy’s first ever headlining show in the city. The Hollywood Forever tour supports the brand-new full-length album of the same name. A blend between nu-metal, pop-punk, trap beats and hauntingly captivating vocals that coats over heavy tones, quoting that this album is “a love letter to LA, but at times it reads more like hate mail”. Dark aesthetics aside, Romy got a little personal with the crowd saying that she wouldn’t be making music had it not been from watching Hannah Montana at her best friend’s house when she was younger. Not sure what the correlation between being a Disney kid turned into a dark, edgy adult is, but as someone who was a fan and now a self-proclaimed emo in their mid twenties – I get it. Toronto artist Jules is Dead was in the audience and was invited up on stage to join Romy in singing No Mercy, a nice little surprise for fans of both artists. Artist Heffy started the night off and when I walked in I honestly thought I had entered a night club with the bass hitting my chest. His music topples the line between 80’s goth, modern alternative and again – club sounds. DeathByRomy can be seen next in the UK and Europe for solo show dates along with various festival appearances throughout the summer as well as opening up for Enter Shikari (who we previously covered) later this fall.
