Do you hear the phone ringing? Pick it up, it’s Phoneboy! New Jersey alt-indie band Phoneboy took over the Velvet Underground in Toronto this past weekend. The Heartbreaker Designer tour was extended for a few extra shows this summer in support of their new album of the same name. They are the perfect summer band, and this is a perfect summer album. It’s bright, energetic with moments that feel like you’re watching a sunset. Personal favourite tracks include: I Look Alive, Talking to Heads and Something On My Mind. It’s one thing for bands to have one amazing vocalist – but how about three amazing vocalists? Wyn, Ricky and Jordan all have their standout moments in their discography. It’s a totally different experience hearing them sing live vs their recordings. They blew me away! Phoneboy brought out Jacob of the Toronto band Good Kid on stage to rock out with them. Good Kid has brought Phoneboy on tour with them in the past and it was noted that both are good friends with each other.
Heartbreaker Designer Tracklist:
1. Wayside
2. Better Than You
3. Hung Up
4. I Look Alive
5. On and On
6. Talking to Heads
7. Red Wine
8. OMG
9. Heartbreak Designer
10. Something On My Mind
11. Running Out of Time
I think the bigger cheer went to the band’s bear figurine being brought on stage, the same figurine which is featured on their album cover. Openers activemirror dazzled the stage and have started a solid following in the Toronto music scene as they just rocked NXNE. Their sound is very reminiscent of the 2010’s indie, soft but pack a punch. I recommend their song Vampira. The tour may be over but I’m certain that the band is working on something enw behind the scenes. To see what Phoneboy is up to next, go a head and drop them a follow on Instagram @Phoneboymusic.
