On Night 2 of their sold out LA stop, I had the opportunity to see them perform at my favourite venue in Los Angeles- the Hollywood Palladium. The Pixies are one of the most influential alternative rock bands in history and have inspired bands such as Nirvana, The Strokes, and Radiohead. It was an absolute honor to have been able to photograph this set during the band’s North American tour. With a heavy emphasis on their earlier work, the band not only drew in a crowd of old school fans consisting of Gen X’ers but also a plethora of Gen Z and Gen Alpha fans who are currently growing up on their music and wanted to see them in the flesh. This mix of old and new school fans was incredible to see and there truly was this sense of community with a multi-generational pool of people across the venue. The band entered the venue with The Beach Boys’s instrumental song “Pet Sounds” and as this is still shortly after Brian Wilson’s passing, their entrance felt like a beautiful tribute to the late front man of the band. They started out the show with “Gouge Away” and they made their presence known by playing with this immense energy and love that only they have been able to perfect for a career spanning over 3 decades. As soon as “Isla de Encanta” came on, mosh pits began to erupt across the venue and the concert went into full swing. It was really cool seeing this mix of generations bond in a mosh pit. With songs like “Death Horizon”, “Motorway to Roswell”, and “Debaser”, the band truly brought out a ton of heavy hitters to their set. Closer to the end, the group performed “Monkey Goes to Heaven” which had me reliving my college days where I would constantly listen to that track, followed by a beautiful tribute to David Lynch with bassist Emma Richardson taking the mic and covering “In Heaven” from the Eraserhead soundtrack. Immediately after, they performed the classic “Where Is My Mind” which had the entire venue singing along, and after a few more songs, the set finished with “Tame” to conclude the show.
