Young the Giant, an alternative rock band from Los Angeles, performed the first show on their new In The Open tour in Napa, California on Saturday September 6th. Typically touring larger venues with a more electric setup, this latest tour was designed to be a mix between electric and acoustic. Reminiscent of the group’s tradition to perform songs from each album in beautiful, natural spaces they happen upon while on the road. Their music suited the less formal vibe of this show, beautiful and more relaxed while maintaining the good energy that Young the Giant is known for. Fans of all ages danced, sang, and cheered as the group performed a mix of new tunes, like “Bitter Fruit”, and old favourites including “Cough Syrup” and “Strings” from their debut self-titled album. While a departure from their usual concert style in which front man Sameer dances around the stage and the show maintains a faster pace. The In The Open tour was off to a good start with sparkling honesty from the band about the origins of their songs and genuine appreciation for being able to perform their music in these different arrangements. The lighting was not as vibrant or varied, which can be seen in the accompanying photos (it is unclear if this is exclusive to the Napa date or characteristic of all shows on this tour) but the musical talent and warm energy more than makes up for this. While on a limited run of dates, Young the Giant may be bringing this new show to a venue near you so we’d recommend checking it out if you get the chance.
