The metal-core scene united as Fit For a King tore through Toronto this past Tuesday night, taking over History as part of their North American “The Lonely God” tour, named after their latest album. With a stacked lineup featuring 156 Silence, Spite, and Make Them Suffer, the night delivered a mix of metal-core and hardcore energy that kept the venue moving nonstop. Pennsylvania’s 156 Silence kicked off the night with intense energy, grabbing the crowd’s attention as they rushed in from the cold outside. Formed in 2016, the band has steadily made headway in the metal-core scene, local fans who missed their May visit were sure to be front and center. Their set mixed aggressive riffs with melodic moments, keeping the intensity high and setting the stage perfectly for the bands to come. Next up was Spite, who shook things up with a heavier, more hardcore and deathcore-infused take on metal-core. Their set broke up the energy in a unique way, adding raw aggression and gnarly riffs that had the crowd locked in – this was definitely one for the headbangers. Front man Darius was a force of nature, rarely breaking eye contact as he prowled the stage like it was his own playground, delivering intense, visceral screams that drove the set’s momentum, while commanding the crowd to push it to the extreme. Arguably one of the heavier performances of the night, Spite left the room on a high, and primed for the next act. Australia’s Make Them Suffer took the stage next, the only international group on the bill and true veterans of the scene, having formed back in 2008. Their set was a perfect showcase of balancing sheer heaviness with melodic moments, delivering intense breakdowns while weaving in softer clean vocals. Sean’s powerful screams drove the heavier moments, while Alex balanced keyboards, clean vocals, and stage presence, dancing and headbanging alongside the crowd in between. The chemistry between them kept the audience locked in, proving why they’ve remained a staple in the metal-core world for over a decade. Headlining the night, Texas’ own Fit For a King kicked things off by diving straight into hits from their latest album Lonely God, opening with “Begin the Sacrifice”, “The Temple” and “Extinction”. The backdrop was decorated in imagery from the album, perfectly setting the tone as the band honed in on their latest material to hype up the crowd. Crowd surfers stole the show, barrelling through and reaching toward front man Ryan Kirby as the audience surged with every breakdown and chorus. By the time the main performance ended, the crowd wasn’t ready to stop. Voices were screaming for an encore, and the band delivered with classic hits like “When Everything Means Nothing” and “Witness the End”, leaving History in a frenzy, capping off a night of exciting musical energy. This night in Toronto was undoubtedly one to remember for all the local hard rock and metal-core fanatics.
