On Sunday night Atlanta rap legend Killer Mike made is return to the city of Toronto with a concert at The Danforth Music Hall. The rapper is currently on his summer trek through North America which is officially known as The Down By Law Tour. Killer Mike didn’t come alone as he brought along The Mighty Midnight Revival which is a group of R&B singers that provide back up vocals for the music. Previous to this show, the hip-hop artist had already been in Canada playing the RBC Bluesfest in Ottawa the night before and also Festival d’ete de Quebec in Quebec City the day before that. The wardrobe for the performers on stage including Killer Mike and Trackstar the DJ was all white attire which gave the feel of a church like congregation. The rapper is still touring in promotion of his latest album titled “Michael” that was released last year in 2023 so it was safe to expect that a lot of new material was on the night’s set list. On this day, Toronto was under a heat alert outside but inside the Danforth Music Hall it was even hotter. Killer Mike first came into the mainstream hip-hop scene over 20 years ago when Outkast featured him on their hit track “The Whole World” and he was also signed to Purple Ribbon Records. I would describe Killer Mike’s flow and style as soulful and very similar to fellow Atlanta rapper Big Boi so it was no coincidence that Mike would cover the song “Kill Jill” in Toronto. The rapper would take lots of time between songs to chat with the audience and also personally introduce the members of his backing band from The Mighty Midnight Revival. The rest of the set list was filled with new songs like the feature track “Down By Law” and old southern classics like “Kryptonite” which got the club dancing. Keep a look out for more concert dates from Killer Mike this summer as the rapper is slated to perform at more venues across Canada and the USA.
