The Force of Nature tour roared through Buffalo RiverWorks on September 28th.

Marianas Trench are currently embarking on their second tour run for their newest album Haven, released last year. During their stop in Buffalo, fans got to enjoy songs from the new album along with some of their biggest hits from their career like Desperate Measures, All to Myself and One Love. Including a mashup between Cross My Heart, Celebrity Status and Shake Tramp. If folks were paying close attention during Josh’s solo moment during Good To You, they may have noticed a different song playing at first – Lover Dearest from Masterpiece Theatre. A track that has not been played in over ten years now. The older fans noticed it right away, myself included. It’s an emotional song so needless to say, I was a mess.

Senses and The Summer Set kicked off the night in pure pop-rock fashion. Both bands brought so much energy, Madison (senses) and Brian Logan Dales’ (The Summer Set) vocals were absolutely amazing. Senses are a newer band calling themselves “emo-friendly, punk curious”, as their sound does draw in from classic punchy punk and the newer wave of emo. And the Summer Set are back in full force with their second album post hiatus, Meet Me at The Record Store releasing this past August. Vocally and sonically, both acts complimented Marianas Trench’s sound and vibe.  Going to a Marianas Trench show is so special – every detail in their set design, backdrop, lighting and sound design is so thought out and cared for. It truly brings their new era to life, you can feel the thunder sounds roaring through your heart and watching the makeshift snowflakes fall from the sky during A Normal Life, Into the Storm & Turn and Run leaves you in awe. It takes you away from just being at a concert venue and dropping you into the story that the album/songs are telling.

These details and theatrics are something Marianas Trench have always been known for, for as long as I’ve seen them in concert. Which takes a concert going experience to the next level and shows how truly unique they are. But there are also silly moments throughout the night, specifically to one Chris Wong – who is currently filling in on bass for Mike Ayley, who is healing from a back injury. September 28th was Chris’s birthday and no better way to celebrate than with a cake, right? How about being force fed an entire cake during the duration of Haven’t Had Enough? While he managed to eat everything and it was impressive as it was gross, Josh and guitarist Matt were holding back laughter while singing. Chris had his last laugh as he rode around on a small scooter during Josh’s solo moment, a sort of payback moment from earlier, causing him to giggle – especially during an emotionally packed moment.

The US leg of the tour carries on until October 22nd, concluding in Santa Cruz, California. Marianas Trench have added some December show dates in both Alberta and Ontario.
