American pop/rock duo Sparks brought their MAD! World Tour to London on Wednesday evening for the first of two nights at Hammersmith’s iconic Eventim Apollo. Celebrating the release of their 28th studio album, brothers Ron & Russell Mael performed a crowd-pleasing mix of old and new material from across their 50+ year career with an inspiring level of enthusiasm and vitality. Bouncing around the stage and routinely encouraging infectious hand-clapping, arm-waving audience participation, younger brother Russell delivered an incredible vocal performance with exceptional showmanship. Meanwhile, older brother Ron sat at his keyboard armed with a famous deadpan persona which was only briefly broken, to the delight of the audience, for a highly memorable dance break during “The Number One Song in Heaven”. The brothers were joined on-stage by a 4-piece band with whom they worked seamlessly to craft an evening of musical joy, with an outstanding light show taking place around them across a stunning yet minimalist set. The crowd were treated to classics such as ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us” and “When Do I Get to Sing My Way’’ alongside newer material including MAD! singles “Do Things My Own Way” and the hit tune “Drowned in a Sea of Tears”, all of which were received warmly by the London fan base. Bringing down the house multiple times with thunderous applause, it’s no surprise that the Mael brothers have developed such a passionate following across their storied career. I certainly wouldn’t place bets on them slowing down any time soon either.
