Toronto Indie Rock darlings Good Kid concluded their massive 29 date tour with two sold out shows in their hometown on Friday, May 22nd at the Danforth Music Hall. A Good Kid show can be easily described as “chronically online” but this is said in the most wholesome way possible. Rolling out a big screen called the “retention cam” before their set, which was filled with little sections that had Subway Surfers playing, along with Family Guy and anime clips. Certainly that is enough to keep the crowd engaged, right? Night one had lead singer, Nick, reading a passage from The Hobbit before their set began. And tons of fans were recording the show on their 3DS too, I would love to see some of that footage someday.

The tour celebrates the debut of their first full length album Can We Hangout Sometime? They’ve taken everything they got right from their previous EPs and created a quintessential 10 track record. It’s full of emotion, it will make you want to dance and rage, and most importantly – put a smile on your face. Every night of the tour is nothing short of eventful. With a variety of wacky ways of fans getting to pick different songs every night. Toronto Night Two had the band launch three hula hoops representing three different songs into the audience while a fan from the balcony threw down a beach ball and the general admission fans had to guide the ball to which song they wanted. Ultimately, No Time To Explain was chosen. Later on in the set, a fan was brought on stage to “represent” the city in a game of Guitar Hero for another moment of an audience member’s chosen song, OsmosisEach city on tour had their own lucky fan playing on stage with them.

Hailing from San Antonio, opener INOHA had the Danforth Music Hall jumping and dancing around from the beginning to the end. They are the true perfect pairing for a Good Kid tour, their energies truly matched and the songs were so fun and catchy. A few songs to check out are Papaya Man, Saturday Nights, and Seventh Heaven. Their music feels like a nice, breezy summer night. Almost the entire touring team joined INOHA on stage during Seventh Heaven for one final dance party and sing along. Fun antics aside, it was a genuine treat to see so many families at this show. It was very clear that this was some kids very first concert and it being such a memorable one at that, it just warms my heart; speaking as someone who started going to concert at a young age. The band spoke very candidly about that as well, and even took extra time to explain what certain songs were about. Especially, Ghost Keeper, which guitarist, David, said it was about him and his dad, and that this song had hit so many different fathers and sons attending these shows. You truly feel a wide range of emotions at a Good Kid show.

The North American tour has since come to a close, but fans north of the border can catch Good Kid playing at this year’s Vans Warped Tour in Montreal in August. Next then they’re off to the UK and Europe in September but until then, please enjoy our photo gallery from the final night of their tour in Toronto just below.
