Singer/songwriter Joy Oladokun brought her Blackbird tour to San Francisco’s famed Fillmore theatre on Sunday March 9th. This isn’t the first time Joy has been featured on Musik Mirage as back in January, we posted a review of the artist’s Montreal concert which can be read HERE. Whether it was ‘Sweet Symphony’, a song off her 2023 record originally performed with country superstar Chris Stapleton, heartfelt ‘if you got a problem’, or ‘We’re All Gonna Die’ (originally feat. Noah Kahan). Oladokun would perform many fan favourites throughout the set. She took the stage to rousing applause from her fans, who were charmed by a combination of her stunning voice and her sincere vulnerability, both of which shone brightly throughout the show. “This is one of my favourite venues in the whole world”, Oladokun said with a grateful tone in her voice. She made the diverse crowd feel at home, at one point joking “if I was sick, I also wouldn’t want to hear me play acoustic guitar” when a fan had a medical incident and needed assistance. She stood with her series of guitars, one of which had a large Hello Kitty decal on it, which sat behind her microphone for most of the show. So while not dancing and jumping around stage as some artists would, her music spoke for itself – honest, raw, and beautiful. With themes about sexuality, politics, and what it’s like to be a black person in America, Oladokun poured her heart out through her music and the audience felt it. We highly recommend catching Joy Oladokun on tour when she comes to your area to see her talent for yourself.
