Marina brought her Princess of Power tour to Toronto’s History on Thursday, September 18th.

With a nod to classic video games and a Star Wars rolling opening credits sequence, Marina takes audiences through six different levels as we move through her extensive and iconic discography. Star Fields, The Heartbreaker/Familiar Hells, The Cocoon, Digital Fantasies, Party Paradiso, and Keys to the Castle are the levels we move through, closing the show with “GAME OVER” flashing on the screen. The songs put together for each level not only have a similar vibe in sound with each other, like pairing Froot, CUNTISSIMO and Bubblegum Bitch together, but also adds an extra level of storytelling. We’re following a character who is finding themselves and their inner power, along with the ups and downs of going on such a journey – all while coming out on top at the end. Which in a way mirrors Marina’s story as a fully independent artist now. Her new album Princess of Power is Marina’s first release as an independent artist.Marina moved around the stage with such poise, but you can also tell she was having fun – all while sounding amazing. It didn’t feel like we were just watching her perform but like the stage and audience blended together into one big dance party. It was super sweet getting to see fans dance on stage with her. Every night fans get invited on stage every night during CUNTISSIMO, which turns into a pageant complete with the winner being awarded a purple sash. Getting to crown a winner for a contest like this is no easy decision as Marina fans show a high level of creativity. Not even for folks part of the contest, but almost every fan in that room was dressed up from different eras of her career. Australian artist Mallrat kicked off the night. Her music is reminiscent of the sounds of Charli XCX and Skrillex, so if you’re fans of them – then I recommend you add her to your roster. She even threw in a cover of the Lana Del Rey track “Radio” which took me back to the 2012 days of Tumblr. I’d like to give a special shout out to a song Marina has in the pre show playlist – “Knights of Cydonia” by Muse. It caught some fans off guard since it is more on the rock side of music but the chorus No one’s gonna take me alive. Time has come to make things right. You and I must fight for our rights. You and I must fight to survive.” rang through the venue. Which I think ties in perfectly with what she stands for, especially since some of the proceeds of merch are going to LGBTQ2+ organizations and aid in support of Palestine. The lyric certainly serves a reminder for our present times. Marina is continuing her Princess of Power tour all across North America, check out the full schedule just below.
