On a warm Thursday evening in May, spectators and musicians alike convened at Le Cafe Big Trouble, nestled in Montreal’s vibrant Latin quarter. The day’s featured artist was Mary Jeans, followed by host Avery Jane. The show is part of a concert series called Big Thursdays, founded by Avery Jane. Big Thursdays feature a different local artist each week and end with an open mic/jam session. The series is a passion project, featuring musicians and poets alike while boosting local artists and encouraging them to play in a relaxed environment. While chatting with Avery, she emphasized the importance that Big Thursdays are free and open to all ages, wanting to be accessible and inviting to all demographics. Starting off the night was our featured artist Mary Jeans, running through her repertoire and sprinkling in some covers and unreleased songs. The night’s atmosphere was warm and inviting, with Mary Jeans easily chatting with the audience between songs. Avery followed with a couple acoustic versions of her songs and ending with hearty encouragement for the upcoming open mic performers. A theme throughout both artists performances was the grounded nature of their lyrics, singing about strained friendships and breakups, and learning to be confident in oneself.
