Californian pop-rockers The Wrecks took over the Danforth Music Hall this past weekend in Toronto. The band put on a fun performance with extremely high energy and some unexpected moments. So far this tour has seen an audience member dressed as a wizard, a mosh pit directly on stage, dancing bananas on stage plus lead singer Nick often asking the crowd if they were ready to commit acts of violence prior to a wall of death during “This Life I Have”. Toronto wasn’t short of any shenanigans, during their song “Normal” three fans were invited on stage to act as a therapist, a patient and an angel on the patient’s shoulder. This particular tune was one of the slower and sadder songs on the set list so getting to witness the chaos of getting everyone on and off the stage was nothing short of entertaining. Last month the band released a brand new EP titled INSIDE: which is only the first half of a full-length album, the other half OUTSIDE to be released at a later date. This EP explores the feelings of isolation when creating something, one’s mental health, and the tolls that come with hiding everything inside for so long. It’s a deeply personal record that hides behind the façade of having fun on stage or what lies behind twinkly guitars and an upbeat tempo. You’ll be bopping your head one minute and letting the lyrics set in the next. The vibe captures the feeling of watching the world go by on the outside while sitting inside your room. But not only in the music but also the set design on stage during the show. With fake grass on the floor, vines along the mic stands and in the rafters, clothing line with shirts left to dry and Nick’s personal couch on stage. We, as the audience, are the ones looking inwards with the band reaching out to us.
Openers Benjamin Carter and Quarters of Change got the crowd to move and groove. You wouldn’t believe it, but this was Benjamin Carter’s first time ever going on tour! He owned that stage, and his vocals were so moving you could feel it on your bones. The sounds of Quarters of Change are reminiscent of the mid 2000s indie-sleaze era, and they certainly had some fans swooning. Both acts could possibly take over the indie/alternative music scene over the next few years. This is the largest tour to date The Wrecks have ever embarked on, and they still have a few weeks to go until they close it out at The Wiltern in Los Angeles. If they’re stopping by in a city near you, do check them out if you get the chance so check your local listings asap.
