German band Electric Callboy kicked off their set emerging mysteriously from the fog, starting off a night full of dancing and a variety of costume changes. Coca Cola Coliseum turned into the biggest dance floor you could ever imagine. Fans were dressed to the nines in a variety of costumes from music videos by the band. We’re talking mullet wigs, a whole lot of pink and neon, think Spring Break in Florida meets German night club – and you got yourself an Electric Callboy concert.

The band included a cover of Sum 41’s Still Waiting and fans were murmuring amongst themselves before the show began about which member of Sum 41 would possibly appear. Low and behold – guitarist, Dave “Brown Sound” Baksh sprung on stage to play with the band, the crowd went absolutely nuts for it! (as did I)

Between all the flashing lights and bouncing around, Electric Callboy found their way into the crowd for an intimate moment for their song Fukboi which is originally a very upbeat almost pop-punk track, so it is kind of mind-boggling hearing “I want you so bad in the worst ways” being sung softly while a piano plays in the background.  And if you ever want to hear a slowed down / ballad version of Maggie Reilly’s Everytime We Touch (made popular by Cascada’s version), do give the bands cover a listen. “A cover of our own cover of a cover” I believe is what the band said to the audience before playing it – an inception of covers transcending genres. The energy picked up again as they transitioned into their more upbeat cover, running back to the stage after the audience parted enough space for them. It was all high and upbeat energy until the very end, and even after with fans singing and dancing along to a variety of the bands singles. I still have RATATATA stuck in my head.

Opener Scene Queen turned the stage pink with her performance. But don’t let her bubbly energy fool you, she screams better than some of the men in the metalcore scene today. Australian metalcore band Polaris was next on deck to open. Fans began to get a little rowdy as somebody decided to do a shoey, a classic Australian party move during the second song – very much setting the tone for the rest of the night. Both are excellent acts if you’re being introduced into the metalcore scene – be it in a girly pop way or rage in your face way.

Electric Callboy is on tour in support of their upcoming album release TANZNEID, coming out later this year on August 7th.
