Companion takes the “cabin in the woods” trope and elevates it to something a lot more. The sci-fi thriller shakes hands with being a horror comedy, without losing sight of what takes place making it an enjoyable watch with perfectly based suspense and laughs. Although you are told right from the beginning how the movie is going to end, the journey is still enjoyable and unique with how the story brings you there. It is well executed and will make you leave the theatre saying “good for her” by the end of it. Some movies can have long, drawn-out moments especially when the audience reaches Act 3 and is left wondering why it is taking so long for the story to conclude. It’s a great watch from beginning to end. Sophie Thatcher, playing a robot, delivers the most humanly role with such soul and emotion. She can very well be the next “final girl” in future horror movies. What’s great about Thatcher’s character Iris is that you truly connect and empathize with her. Sure, none of us have ever been in a situation where you’re a robot reprogrammed to kill someone, but feeling out of control in your own personal relationships is a common feeling we all get at times. Just going along with someone in the name of love and then learning how to take your power back once your eyes have been open, I know that’s relatable to some of us. Jack Quaid plays the be perfect “asshole” character, Josh, but still manages to be charming somehow. As the movie goes on, that façade quickly fades away. I think everyone has met a “Josh” at some point, a deeply insecure person who wants everything and thinks they deserve it. On top of that, doesn’t work hard for any of it, comes off as likeable but ends up being the worst. I would be lying if I didn’t say that I was singing “he had it coming!” (a la Cell Block Tango from Chicago) towards the finale. This is honestly a perfect anti-Valentine’s Day movie, watch it with a group of friends or on your own. If you’ve seen and liked the movie ‘Fresh’ (2022) you’ll enjoy Companion. I’m sure going to the theatre this weekend will be a popular activity given the occasion so make sure to check out Companion if you get the chance!
